With over 400 years of history, Hasami is a pottery town where traditional craftsmanship continues to thrive. Famous for its Hasami ware—a style of ceramic tableware for everyday use—Hasami also offers abundant natural beauty. In Nakaoyama, an area filled with pottery workshops, you can observe artisans practicing their art.
Highlights
Onigi Rice Terraces
Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields, this area offers a glimpse of Japan’s timeless rural landscape, with seasonal views that change throughout the year.
Nakaoyama
Located in the mountains, slightly removed from the town center, Nakaoyama is a pottery production hub where numerous workshops continue the centuries-old tradition of creating unique, handcrafted pieces. Explore old-fashioned scenes of brick chimneys and narrow alleyways as you wander through this historic area.
Porcelain Box Cookies - A Sustainable Initiative
This eco-friendly project involves recycling the plaster molds used in pottery production by crushing them and using the powder to condition the soil of nearby fields. Rice grown in this soil is milled into rice flour, which is then combined with local ingredients to create tasty cookies. These cookies are packaged in Hasami pottery containers.
