Miyoshi Mononoke Museum
Japan’s First Yokai Museum Opens in Miyoshi!
In April 2019, Japan’s very first yokai-themed museum, the Koichi Yumoto Collection: Miyoshi Mononoke Museum, opened its doors in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The museum showcases a fascinating array of yokai (supernatural beings from Japanese folklore), centered around the extensive personal collection of folklorist and yokai researcher Koichi Yumoto.
The museum is located in the town of Miyoshi, which is the setting of the legendary yokai tale Ino Mononoke Roku (The Record of Strange Apparitions in Ino). This unique museum not only preserves and presents traditional yokai culture but also brings it to life through interactive exhibits.
One of the main attractions is the “teamLab Yokai Amusement Park,” an immersive digital playground where visitors of all ages can learn about yokai through play. Activities like “Sketch Yokai and People” invite children and adults alike to explore the world of spirits and imagination in a hands-on way.
Next to the museum is the Miyoshi Area Cultural and Tourism Exchange Center, which features a cozy rest area for visitors, a gift shop offering local specialties, and a restaurant where you can enjoy regional cuisine. Whether you’re a fan of folklore, traveling with kids, or simply curious about Japan’s mysterious side, the Miyoshi Mononoke Museum offers an unforgettable experience.
