This taxi tour takes you to the key sites in Kumamoto associated with the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who spent the last five years of his life in Kumamoto. The tour includes Kumamoto Castle, where Musashi is known to have visited; Reigando Cave, where he wrote the famous military strategy book The Book of Five Rings; and the Shimada Museum of Art, which has an extensive collection of exhibits related to Musashi. An experienced guide will accompany you throughout the tour.

Highlights

Kumamoto Castle

Built by Lord Kato Kiyomasa, a master castle builder, Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan's three most famous castles and was visited by Miyamoto Musashi during his lifetime. One section of the castle grounds was also home to Musashi. Though the castle suffered major damage in the 2016 earthquakes, including collapsed stone walls and buildings, restoration efforts are ongoing. The main keep was restored in 2021, and it features new exhibits that focus on the history of the earthquakes and the ongoing recovery.

Reigando Cave/Gohyaku Rakan (Unganzen-ji Temple)

Miyamoto Musashi spent his final five years in Kumamoto, and it was in this cave that he wrote The Book of Five Rings, his famous treatise on strategy and martial arts. Along the narrow path leading to the cave, there are rows of stone statues called the Gohyaku Rakan, each with a unique posture and expression, lending the environs a mystical, mysterious atmosphere.

Shimada Museum of Art

This museum preserves and displays artifacts related to Kumamoto's samurai culture, including items associated with Kato Kiyomasa and the Hosokawa family. Of particular note is the permanent exhibition dedicated to Miyamoto Musashi, showcasing his weapons, personal belongings, and calligraphy.
