Use wax dye to create your own patterns and pictures! Immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Tokushima's indigo dyeing culture.

During this experience, you will use cloths about 1m x 1m in size to do roketsu dyeing and create wax patterns. This activity has its roots in the traditional dyeing culture of Tokushima from the Edo Period (1603-1868), and involves lye fermantation using natural indigo.

There is also an indigo field in front of the Yamauchi workshop where indigo is cultivated from spring to summer and the sukumo dried leaves used for the dye are made between fall and winter. Learn about Tokushima indigo while enjoying this unique cultural experience with the full support of indigo experts.

Enjoy lunch (a main course of fish or meat, drink and dessert) made with seasonal and local ingredients in an atmospheric & historic Udatsu building, renovated into a cafe. You can also enjoy displays of traditional Japanese umbrellas (wagasa) and indigo-dyed curtains inside the shop.
