Product Code:

Overview

In this 150-minute tour you will visit Kyoto's Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi factory, which refines over 70% of Japan's domestic urushi lacquer (the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree), see how lacquer has been used inside a prominent Buddhist temple and eat lunch using the traditional Kyoto "asagi-wan bowl" lacquerware. This is a unique opportunity to discover traditional and modern applications of Japanese urushi lacquer in contemporary Kyoto. In addition to the tour of the factory, you will also learn to apply lacquer on chopsticks and take them with you as a present.

Highlights

✓ Enter the private area of Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi factory and see how lacquer is refined

✓ See urushi lacquer on modern-day goods such as surfboards, skateboards and bicycles

✓ Apply lacquer to chopsticks during a private workshop and take them with you as a present

✓ Visit Bukkoji Temple and discover the traditional use of lacquer in Japan's temple architecture

✓ Enjoy lunch with Kyoto ingredients using a lacquerware bowl

Founded in 1909, Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi factory witnessed the decline of production and use of traditional Japanese urushi lacquer throughout the 20th century. The current 4th generation owner aims to reestablish the presence of urushi in everyday life by promoting the safe use of high quality lacquer not only for traditional items, but also for modern-day goods. On this tour you will have the chance to see traditional use of Japanese urushi lacquer on iconic Buddhist temple buildings, as well as everyday use of lacquer as a tableware during lunch at the temple's restaurant.

The use of urushi lacquer in Japan dropped from 500 tons annually in 1975 to under 30 tons in recent years. Moreover, production of domestic urushi is endangered and diminishing. Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi is aiming at reviving the traditions of lacquerware by collaborating with various Kyoto artists, stores and brands, and creating a unique mix of traditional values and modern-day uses. One such project aims to revive the classic Kyoto-style lacquerware bowl "asagi-wan" used as tableware. You can enjoy the thin, light and elegant bowl during your lunch at Bukkoji Temple's "D&Department" restaurant. The adjacent shop also offers a variety of local craft products.

During the factory tour you will see some of the well-kept secrets of refining and coloring lacquer for the needs of local craftsmen. Following the factory tour you will visit the workshop area at the top floor and apply lacquer on a pair of chopsticks using the traditional "fuki-urushi" technique. You will take them with you as a present before visiting the nearby Bukkoji Temple and marvel at its lacquer-covered main hall. At the temple's precinct is "D&Department" store and restaurant where you will enjoy a classic lunch set with Kyoto ingredients served using lacquerware. This tour is a short journey to discover the ways in which Kyoto's classical culture and traditional crafts intersect and complement each other.
