12:00 PM Lunch (Buddhist Cuisine)
Indulge in a traditional Shojin-ryori lunch, savoring the delicate and colorful Buddhist cuisine served in a historic Japanese building.
2:00 PM Zazen Session and Temple Tour
Zuiganji Temple is one of the most famous Zen temples in the Tohoku region. An English-speaking Buddhist priest will first show you around the temple, including a tour of special rooms which are normally not open to the public. After this, the priest will preside over an introductory zazen (Zen meditation) workshop, where you will learn the basics in preparation for the zazen session that begins on Day 2.
4:10 PM Check-in to Matsushima Sakan Shoan
Secluded in a tranquil corner of Matsushima, this ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) offers a haven of peace, where breathtaking bay views unfold before you. Wander through the inn's private woodland, where nature trails wind through seasonal splendor, offering a truly exclusive escape.
7:00 PM Dinner (Japanese Cuisine)
Please enjoy seafood with a sophisticated kaiseki course using fresh seafood purchased every morning.
9:00 AM Morning Zazen Session
On Day 2, you will practice Zen each morning at the serene Saikoji Temple, affiliated with the same Zen sect as Zuiganji Temple. This will involve two 20-minute sessions of Zen meditation to cultivate stillness.
10:15 AM Japanese Garden Visit
Nestled along Matsushima's waterfront, Entsu-in Temple features beautiful moss gardens, as well as a rock garden representing the islands of Matsushima Bay.
11:30 AM Lunch (Tempura)
We will have tempura that captures the deliciousness of seasonal ingredients.
1:00 PM Scenic Boat Ride
2:00 PM Matcha Break at Kanrantei
Enjoy a bowl of matcha at the Kanrantei Tea House, where you will be treated to a stunning panoramic view of the bay.
2:40 PM Return to the Hotel
6:00 PM Dinner (Sushi in Shiogama City)
Shiogama boasts Japan's highest concentration of sushi restaurants, each serving sushi made with the freshest local seafood and regional rice, creating a unique and authentic culinary tradition.
9:45 AM Check-out
10:00 AM Morning Zazen Session
At the end of the retreat, we will perform 40 minutes of zazen meditation, just like a monk would do as a daily ascetic practice.
