■Tatani Wat Bissamen Temple

A rock cave where Sakagami Tamuramaro enshrined Bishamonten to commemorate Seii. It is the largest cave hall in Japan. The cliff-built Bishamon-do Temple has been rebuilt every time there is a fire. The statue of Joroku Fudo Myoo (prefecture-designated cultural property), made in the Heian period, and the “rock face Buddha” (Magaibutsu), which is said to be the northern limit, are also a must-see. The entire precincts have been designated as historic sites.

■Genbikei

Genbikei Gorge is a national scenic spot and natural monument formed slowly over time due to the erosion of the Iwai River, which flows from Mount Kurikoma to Ichinoseki city.

The rock surface polished by the eternal flow of time, the emerald green water flow, and the beautiful scenery played by the four seasons that adorn the riverbank are designated as national scenic natural monuments.

■Sekirei no Ichi

A sake brewery founded in Taisho 7. At the restaurant, which has been renovated from a sake brewery, you can enjoy local cuisine, starting with “mochi.” The site has facilities such as a shop, a microbrewery, and a sake folk culture museum.

■Chuson-ji Temple and Konjikido

Amidado (Amidado) of the Tendai sect “Chuson-ji Temple.” It is also known as “Hikarido” (Hikarido). At the end of the Heian period, the “Oshu Fujiwarashi clan” (Oshu Fujiwarashi), which built a kingdom of Buddhist culture in Tohoku, was established in 1124 (Tenji 1). It was registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2011 (Heisei 23).

■Motsu-ji Temple

Motsu-ji Temple was founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, and many temples were built during the period from Motohira (Motohira) the second generation of the Fujiwara clan to Hidehira (Hidehira) the third. After the fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, all buildings were burnt down due to repeated disasters, but now the Jodo Garden centered around Oizumi Gaike and the ruins of a Heian period temple have been preserved in an almost perfect state, and they have received double designation as a special historic site and special place of scenic beauty by the country. A new Heian-style main hall was built in Heisei 1.
