Begin your journey at Kumamoto Port in Kumamoto City, where a ferry will take you across to Shimabara Port in Nagasaki Prefecture before you continue on to Unzen.

The highlight of this tour are the Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hells), a geothermal wonderland where nearly 30 hells—including the infamous Daikyokan Hell, with hot springs and steam vents nearing 100°C—dot the landscape.

Unzen is also a historically significant site for Christian persecution during the Edo period (1603-1868). A local guide will lead you through Unzen’s fascinating history and key attractions.

Unzen Hell Tour

Onsen "hells" (jigoku) are geothermically active locations with billowing white steam and a distinct smell of sulfur. 

Unzen has around 30 hells, including Daikyokan Hell, where boiling water and steam erupt from the ground. The walking paths let you safely experience this otherworldly landscape with all your senses.

Christian Martyr Memorial

During the Edo period (1603-1868), Unzen was used as a site for religious persecution, where Christians were tortured to give up their faith. This monument serves as a solemn reminder of those who lost their lives in the Unzen Hell area.

Unzen Foot Steamer

Experience geothermal heat firsthand (firstfoot?) at this rest spot where you can warm your feet with the hot steam rising from the ground.
