The Kunisaki Peninsula, located in the northeastern part of Oita Prefecture, is known as a sacred land where the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism — the blending of Japan’s indigenous religion with imported Buddhism — is still prevalent today.
On this tour, a guide will take you to Usa Shrine, one of the origins of this religious fusion; Fuki-ji Temple, the oldest wooden building in Kyushu; and the impressive Kumano Magaibutsu, Japan’s oldest and some of the largest cliff carvings of Buddhist deities. You will also experience the Buddhist culture unique to the Kunisaki region.
Highlights
Usa Shrine
This shrine is the head shrine of all Hachiman shrines across Japan. The main hall is a designated National Treasure and exemplifies the ancient architectural style known as Hachiman-zukuri.
Fuki-ji Temple
The oldest existing wooden structure in Kyushu. The Amida Hall (Fuki-ji Main Hall) is counted among the three great Amida Halls of Japan, alongside Byodo-in Hoo-do in Uji, Kyoto, and Chuson-ji Konjiki-do in Hiraizumi, Iwate. It is also a National Treasure.
Kumano Magaibutsu
Climb the stone steps, which are said to have been built by a demon in a single night, to reach the cliffside statues. The carvings of Fudo Myoo on the left and Dainichi Nyorai on the right are awe-inspiring and among the largest and oldest cliff carvings in Japan.
