Experience Mikoshi Parade in Kichijoji, Tokyo!
On September 13, the “Kichijoji Autumn Festival” is held. It’s a great opportunity to experience a traditional festival featuring the parade of Mikoshi portable shrines. You’ll watch as many as 11 Mikoshi, one from Musashino Hachimangu Shrine and 10 from each district of the town. Every Mikoshi group has its own distinctive style of carrying and shouting. At the highlight, all Mikoshi gather and demonstrate their performances.
Join this tour and your guide will tell you all about this festival and show you around the town which is full of festival atmosphere. On the 13th you can take part in carrying a Mikoshi with the townspeople and parade it around the town.
Kichijoji is only 15 minutes by train from Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Experience Mikoshi Parade in Kichijoji, Tokyo!

1: Kichijoji Daiyagai

One of the major shopping streets in Kichijoji. You join mikoshi carrying here. On September 13, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., you wear a Hanten festival jacket and join the townspeople in carrying the Mikoshi and parading around the town. You’ll be a Mikoshi carrier!

2: Musashino Hachimangu

This shrine is the guardian shrine of Kichijoji. It is said to have been founded in the 8th century. After the Great Meireki Fire in the 17th century, people in Edo who lost their homes were ordered to move to this area and built a village. Since then, this Musashino Hachimangu has been the guardian shrine of this town, Kichijoji. Local people visit this shrine and pray in various occasions such as New Year’s Day, Festivals, family events and New Year’s Eve.


Experience Mikoshi Parade in Kichijoji, Tokyo!

Meeting at 15:00 Kichijoji station → changing clothes and explanation at the Diamond Street Shopping Promotion Association office → leaving after dedication at the sacred sake brewery (departure place) → traveling (carrying) the center of Kichijoji city for 2 hours → finishing at the sacred sakesho/changing clothes at the office and disbanding (around 18:00)
