Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is located at the northern end of Takahashi city in northwestern Okayama prefecture, on Mt. Gaeushi at an altitude of 480 meters. There are 12 castles with castle towers left all over the country, but among them, only Bitchu Matsuyama Castle takes the form of a “mountain castle,” and it is widely known as the only existing mountain castle in Japan. Although the exterior looks like three layers, along with the castle tower, which is a highlight of the two-story, two-story structure, the double turret and part of the earthen wall also still exist and are designated as important cultural properties of the country. In the Kamakura period, a fortress was built on Mount Omatsu on Mount Gagyu, and it spread throughout Mount Gayu with the times, but what is now commonly called “Bitchu Matsuyama Castle” is the castle tower that remains on the summit of Mt. Komatsu. It can be seen that the role changed from a “medieval castle for battle” to an “early-modern castle equipped with a castle tower and stone walls” over a long history.
