Embark on a 1-day private outdoor adventure in Koka, where you’ll explore the authentic world of ninjas, their culture, and the peaceful surrounding nature. This tour offers hands-on experiences, including ninja training, and provides a deep dive into the region’s rich history and ninja heritage.
Koka Ninjas are a key part of Japan’s ninja culture, known for their stealth, intelligence gathering, and unique tactics. Located in Koka City (Shiga Prefecture), this area was historically a major ninja location, where families skilled in ninjutsu played important roles in spycraft and wartime strategy.
The tour begins by meeting your ninja guide at JR KONAN Sta., followed by a visit to the Kokaryu Real Ninja Museum, a hands-on ninja-themed facility. Here, you’ll learn about the history of ninjas and their significant role in Japanese history.
Next, experience making the traditional “hyorogan", a ninja food that was once used as an emergency ration during missions.
Afterward, embark on a 2.5-hour trek with your ninja guide up Mt. Iwao (471m), a place where ninjas once trained. Explore the ninja ruins, enjoy the stunning views from the summit, and enjoy a traditional rice ball lunch.
After the trek, unwind at the peaceful Miyano Onsen, located at the foot of the mountain, where you can enjoy a soothing bath in a tranquil setting that blends traditional charm with modern comforts.

[Train Schedule to JR KONAN Station]
To get to JR KOKA Station from JR KYOTO Station, take the following train:
8:26 AM: Board the JR Biwako Line (Special Rapid bound for YASU)
8:48 AM: Arrive at JR KUSATSU Station (5th stop)
8:56 AM: Transfer to JR Kusatsu Line bound for TSUGE
9:32 AM: Arrive at JR KONAN Station
The tour will proceed in light rain. However, in case of severe weather, it may be canceled. The final decision will be made by 4:00 PM on the previous day, and you will be notified if the tour is canceled.
The ninja food-making experience uses ingredients like lotus seeds, ginseng, cinnamon, yam, coix seed (Job’s tears), and rice. Please be cautious if you have allergies to any of these.
We will attempt, within reason, to accommodate allergies based on the information provided. However, please understand that it may not be possible to completely exclude some particular ingredients.
For safety reasons, individuals with health concerns or those who are pregnant are not eligible to participate.
The itinerary may be adjusted based on the participants' fitness levels. Depending on the weather and participants' energy levels, the course may be shortened.
While Ninja guide’s English communication is limited to basic conversation, other tools such as apps will be used to assist with communication.
At the Real Ninja Museum, there are pamphlets available in Japanese, English, and Chinese, and some of the Japanese exhibits are also written in English.
Additionally, at some exhibits, you can view translations in Chinese, Korean, or Spanish by scanning a QR code with your smartphone.
What you need
Wear trekking-appropriate clothing, sports shoes (trekking shoes recommended), and warm layers as needed for the season. A backpack must also be brought.
Bring drinks, a towel, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and clothes for after the onsen.

Meet your ninja guide at JR KONAN Station and then head to the Kokaryu Real Ninja Museum. Here, you’ll receive an introduction to Koka Ninja and their fascinating history.
10:30 AM - 11:45 AM
After the introduction, experience making hyorogan (ninja food). Don’t miss this unique hands-on experience!
12:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Embark on a ninja trekking adventure on Mt. Iwao. Trek through the mountain where ninjas once trained, and enjoy a rice ball lunch while taking in the stunning views from the summit.
4:00 PM
Arrive at Miyano Onsen. Relax and unwind in pure comfort, a soothing treat after the physical effort of your trekking adventure.
