Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum
The Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum is a cultural facility that occupies the former residence of the Kusakabe family, who prospered as "Taniya," a merchant purveyor to the shogunate during the Edo period. The current building was rebuilt in 1879 by master craftsman Kawajiri Jisuke after a major fire in 1875. The craftsmanship of Hida artisans shines through in every detail in this all-cypress townhouse, a two-story gabled building with staggered levels, powerful wooden framework, deep eaves, latticework, and dark brown exterior that conveys the elegance of Takayama architecture from the Edo period. It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1966, and is currently open to the public as a folk crafts museum that exhibits folk crafts.
